Let's Talk About Time.

I do not need to post every day I am here, or I will end up with around 112 posts, which is entirely unnecessary. Entirely.

Today I spent almost three hours in my literature seminar, which is a writing class that will focus on producing worthwhile emails in an attempt to improve the internet and virtual communication as forums for art and literature. Or something sort of like that; I'm having trouble keeping a train of thought because I'm worried about the beans that I'm cooking. I bought a bag of dried beans, which have been soaking for quite some hours and having been "simmering" a few more. Those beans are secretly, quietly angry. They also don't want to become properly tender. At any rate, my lit. professor is a cool, laid-back sort of guy who seems to be willing to take the class in any direction that seems appropriate when we come to it. I like that.

Time Arts was... long. I have never had a five hour class before, and now I know that it is not fun. It only took one class to find this out. It is a great class, mind you, with a knowledgeable and interesting/interested teacher, but I kind of had a panic attack from sitting in this stuffy little room for so many hours. We watched some Merce Cunningham dances on film, which was pretty fascinating, but I had to leave so I could drink some water and stand in the cold air. I usually don't have those kinds of problems. Oh well. Then we did a short project about time, where we had to use some very limited materials (string, buttons, slides, jar lids, pieces of wood) to create some kind of piece that relates to our perception of time. I felt like I was bullshitting the whole thing, but it was fun and I kind of liked what I made even though it was pretty tacky. I've never spent a whole lot time with, well, time-based arts. Performance, super-conceptual stuff, video art; it's all really new to me. Our teacher had taken one of the balls of string and used it to outline a path between our pieces; someone had to ask to take it down because people not in our class kept tripping over it. Oh dear.

PNCA has several VERY nice computer labs; I'm impressed with the equipment. Admittedly it doesn't take much, though.

I did 45 thumbnails for my illustration studio class over the weekend, and it was one of the most boring drawing assignments I've ever had. I did better than some, though; Coach Fowlkes gave me much training in the art of thumbnailery. Yeeeuh.

Last night Jen and I sat around and talked about girly things and Bjorky things while sketching thumbnails and watching Ren and Stimpy. It was a more than acceptable evening, I think.

I broke down an bought a new coat here, which is big and poofy but not too big and poofy. I got some new sweaters, too, one of which has big rhinestone buttons and is plaid-y. HAHAHA. I'm starting to enjoy living "alone" more, it's nice to have my own plates and my own towels and my own food, and to have dominion over all those things.
